| "African Violet" is the common name and they belong to the Gesneriacea
family of plants.
Why "African Violets?" Well these plants where first discovered
in Tanzania in Africa over 100 years ago. They have been hybridized over
the years to flower all year round and to like the same indoor conditions
that we like, enabling them to grown successfully all around the world.
In fact, African Violets are one of the most popular houseplants available.
The flowers resemble violets in their colour and the shape of their five
petals.
Growers have crossed the original Sainpaulia species to produce plants
with bigger and better flowers, after many years of hybridizing, flowers
have been produced in most shades of purple, blue, pink, and whites, now
even pale yellow have been achieved. Bicolor and multi colored flowers
have been added.
